The Galashiels Triathlon (April 18th/19th) provided an impressive start to the Borders Sport and Leisure Triathlon Series with 45 competitors enrolled in the Come and Tri event and 180 in the main Sprint Triathlon (twenty more than in 2014).

Ewan Jackson, Chief Executive of Borders Sport and Leisure said: “We have had a fabulous start to this year’s triathlon series with Galashiels  attracting an exceptional number of entrants who all seemed to have a great day. There were many familiar faces in the pack but plenty of new competitors too which shows that triathlon is continuing to grow in popularity as a sport.”

Amongst this year’s first time competitors was Isabel McMullan from Bathgate whose husband entered her as a surprise. She only discovered he had registered her for the event at the end of February. Isabel said: “This was my first triathlon and I’m totally hooked. I was absolutely buzzing afterwards and still can’t believe I did it. It was run very professionally and everyone who was helping with the organisation was fantastic from the start to the finish. I managed to complete the course in 2 hours 5 minutes and 15 seconds and hope to work on my swimming so I might be able to improve next time.  My husband bought me a new bike for Christmas and its first outing was actually on Sunday at the event – I had to take the tags off it before the start.”

The Borders Sport and Leisure Triathlon series will continue with events in Selkirk (May 3rd), Peebles (June 7h), Hawick (June 21st), Kelso (August 9th) and Eyemouth (September 20th).
