Teenage racing sensation Damani Marcano, was due to announce plans to compete in both the Volkswagen Racing Cup and The VAG Trophy when both championships made a surprise announcement.  Racing Line declared the transfer of the Volkswagen Racing Cup to the operators of the VAG Trophy, Maximum Motorsport earlier this week. The announcement came the night before the Autosport International Show, less than 24hrs before Marcano was set to issue a press release on his intention to compete in both championships.

On the evening of the announcement the new provisional calendar for the Volkswagen Racing Cup was shared publically – placing six out of the seven race weekends on the same weekends as the VAG Trophy.  Competing in both championships immediately became impractical for Team-HARD. racing driver Damani Marcano.

In 2015, aged 16, Damani was the youngest driver to complete a Volkswagen Racing Cup season in its 15-year history and the youngest driver ever to line up on the grid in the VAG Trophy. Marcano ended the season as the youngest driver ever to qualify on the front row and collect fastest lap in a VAG Trophy race.

Team-HARD. Racing Principal Tony Gilham comments: “Damani developed faster than even I expected once we got him out on track for those extra rounds in the VAG Trophy last year. To go into any season as a novice with no significant testing beforehand or between race weekends and end the season with a front-row and a fastest lap is impressive in itself, and more so against experienced adult racers. With the increased sponsorship he has attracted, we wanted to build on this in 2016 with him in both championships. We have met with Maximum Motorsport, along with other teams, and they have been fantastic at listening to everyone’s feedback to retain a lot of what makes the Volkswagen Racing Cup great. Huge progress has been made, but it is not yet practical for Damani or other drivers with the same intention, to compete fully in both championships. We remain hopeful as more refinements are made to the championships’ calendars over coming days.”

These announcements come just in time for the Autosport International Show, where Damani will be meeting fans, conducting interviews by the media and demonstrating the latest in simulator technology with Pro-Sim (Sat 16th & Sun 17th Jan).  With nothing set in stone and so many racing series exhibiting at the show, Damani is still able to explore alternative options for his 2016 plans.

Marcano’s Management advisor, Ivor Bourne of Integra Sports Partners commented: “The Autosport International Show is the perfect opportunity to discuss the possibilities with the operator of these two great championships while also exploring all of the options for Damani’s next step. Damani brings a lot to the table for both championships including national mainstream press coverage and his fast-growing social media audience. It would be a great continuation of the story for everyone concerned if Damani could compete in both championships. We understand that this might not be possible so while there is continued uncertainty my advice to him has been to keep all of his options open. I personally hope that it can become practical for him to implement his original plan.”

Damani Marcano comments: “The Volkswagen Racing Cup and VAG Trophy are both great championships. I enjoyed racing in both of them last year. With the increased support from my sponsor, The Clever Baggers, competing in both championships was the ideal way to step up my development and I was massively looking forward to it. Because the regulations on the cars are so close between championships, I learn so much more in each VAG Trophy race than if I was just testing. Obviously, the championships are bigger than just me and they will have other things to think about but I really hope there is a way forward.”
